Working With Bodies in Talk Therapy: An Integrative Psychodynamic Approach to Body-Mind Connections
I will be offering a 2 hour workshop on Tuesday, March 15, 2016 from 2-4pm. The workshop will provide 2 CE’s for clinical social workers licensed in NY State. Cost will be $65/person.
Working With Bodies in Talk Therapy: An Integrative Psychodynamic Approach to Body-Mind Connections
Most of us are well aware that body and mind are no longer considered isolated or separate entities. In recent years the number of techniques, ideas, and approaches available to address the intricate links between these complex systems has expanded exponentially. While this advance in our understanding provides therapists with a wide range of possible interventions, it also leaves open the question of how to work with the body in talk therapy.
In this workshop we will consider ways that a psychodynamic frame can help clinicians work with body/mind issues such as: body as container of unformulated experience; trauma theory and body/mind; bringing bodily experience into therapeutic conversation; symbolic meaning and concrete experience; and physical health and emotional well-being.

About the Course:
Recognizing that integrative practice is an extremely important component of contemporary clinical work, this course will offer participants a systematic approach with which to make decisions about what intervention or group of interventions are most appropriate for each client at different points in the therapeutic process. Drawing on theories of psychotherapy, clinical social work assessment and diagnosis, and evidence-based models, the course will consider effective approaches to the development of a healthy sense of self and agency with different clients and within different diagnostic categories.
The recent history of the medical and mental health fields can largely be characterized as eclectic, as more practitioners harness seemingly disparate therapies and techniques to arrive at clinical breakthroughs. But while social work professionals have been involved in integrative practice informally and intuitively for years, resources to bring structure to this therapeutic concept have been few and far between.
Integrative Social Work Practice offers tools for integrating theory when conceptualizing cases, communicating with clients, and making better therapeutic use of client individuality. Using clinical material from a variety of settings, it begins with the basic organizing principles behind effective integrative practice. Clinical examples flesh out theoretical rationales, and psychodynamic, cognitive-behavioral, and developmental methods are shown in practical context. The reader will learn how to balance flexibility and boundaries and integrate diverse theories.

A Systematized Approach to Integrative Practices in Clinical Social Work: How and When to Use Different Interventions in Clinical Practice
4-12 CE credits
Topic: Recognizing that integrative practice is an extremely important component of contemporary clinical work, this course will offer participants a systematic approach with which to make decisions about what intervention or group of interventions are most appropriate for each client at different points in the therapeutic process. Drawing on theories of psychotherapy, clinical social work assessment and diagnosis, and evidence-based models, the course will consider effective approaches to the development of a healthy sense of self and agency with different clients and within different diagnostic categories.
Course Description and educational activity content: This course presents guidelines for enhancing and facilitating clinical social work practice, specifically using social work principles, knowledge and skills to integrate different interventions as necessary for a client’s successful progression in therapy. The course offers a practice model that views healthy development rather than pathology as the medium for individual change. An integrative approach is considered most useful for this practice model. The course will consider different theories of psychotherapy, including psychodynamic, cognitive-behavioral, mind-body, developmental and harm reduction, with evidence-based models and research about each approach to be discussed. Clinical social work assessment and diagnosis will be used presented as a tool for determining the most effective approaches to develop a healthy sense of self and agency with different clients and diagnostic categories and at different times in a client’s development. The idea that ongoing assessment and evaluation helps a clinician recognize and respond to a client’s changing needs over time will also be presented and discussed. Class participants will be asked to read articles related to the topic under discussion each week. Each class will consist of a presentation by the instructor followed by discussion of theory, including the assigned reading, and related clinical material. When appropriate, role play, discussion of participants’ cases and other participant activities will be used to clarify concepts and activate further discussion.
Location, date and time: This course is given at the instructor’s office at 102 West 85th Street, #5H, New York, NY 10024. Next course has not been scheduled yet. If you are interested, please contact me through the contact page on this website.

- The role of the eating behavior in that client's life
- The addictive nature of the behaviors
- The kinds of issues that may be difficult for each clinician
- The role of other diagnostic issues that might reinforce eating behaviors
- Social, familial, racial and gender dynamics will also be discussed
